Think of Me When the Daffodils bloom - Part1
My father was a career officer in the British army during World War Two. He was born in the Channel Islands and had been sent to private military schools and groomed for a military career.
He was stationed in Aldershot, just outside the environs of London, prior to being sent overseas. One day, while flat on his back under a car he was repairing, he saw a pair of attractive ankles attached to a pair of attractive legs pause beside his vehicle. He rolled out from under the car and looked up into huge dark brown eyes and fell in love in a heartbeat. According to the lady's memory, (my mother) she looked down into beautiful blue eyes and fell in love completely and for all time in that moment.
My mother was a private in the ATS ( Auxiliary Territorial Service...whatever that means) and was stationed at the same army base. She was primarily an ambulance driver and later became a staff driver....that is, driving officers, from majors to generals, all over England to secret meetings. A few times she had the honour of driving Montgomery himself. At that point in time courtships were conducted rather hurriedly because soldiers could be shipped off somewhere almost without warning. Their courtship was no exception.
They met whenever they were both off duty and went dancing with friends or for a few drinks at the officers' club or the local pub. They tried to squeeze as much pleasure as they could into their brief times together. Everyone seemed a little desperate to enjoy themselves during those dark and terrifying times. They could often hear the bombs dropping over the sound of the music.
They knew from the first that they would marry and saw no reason to wait. My father, who was a major at that time, knew he would be sent away shortly and wanted a hasty wedding so he could spend the last week with his bride.
They married and their best man, Jack, a Canadian soldier, later became my uncle by marriage.Their honeymoon was, according to them, very romantic and very intense. They had to pack a lot into a week. I never pressed for details.
My father was sent away to India to train Indian soldiers and my mom continued with her duties. Sometimes she would visit her family in London and take Jack, who was lonely and homesick, with her. It was a dangerous thing to do. London was under constant bombardment but they seemed to live charmed lives. My mother had five sisters and a brother in London and was always worried about them. When Jack met her younger sister, he fell head over heels for her but the wedding didn't take place until the war was over. At this point it was in it's second to last year.
She didn't see my father again for two years. It must have been an eternity to them. She wrote to him often but a lot of those letters never reached him. She sent him a photograph and a lock of her hair and he sent her a portrait of himself (both of which can be seen at the conclusion of this post). He too, sent a lock of his hair. The two curls of hair one dark brown and one black now lie entwined in a family album.
When he finally got leave and knocked on her door in London; it was like meeting a stranger. They felt a little awkward and since they were both shy people, they couldn't find the right words for a time and just gazed at each other, looking for the magic they had felt at first meeting. Of course, as soon as they fell into each other's arms, the magic began again and stayed with them throughout a long and happy marriage of fifty five years.
My father had been offered a colonelcy if he agreed to stay in India. He did not know what he wanted to do. The course of their lives and later, mine, would be changed irrevocably if he accepted......
To be continued.

Jeannie,
ReplyDeleteThe Daffodil story is more beautiful the second time around, thanyou dear friend for sharing it again with everyone. There was not a dry eye in our house this morning, everyone loved it,even Susan.
Hope you had a nice outing at the hockey game and Sam's team won.
Hope Nana is feeling well and I know she will enjoy the Major's story in one setting,I know we all did, called everyone I could think off,and the phone haven't stopped ringing....Nan told me while she was reading Daffodils, Gil told her he wanted to comment,I will have to find it and see what he said...see you later PIC...lots of love as always.......Nee
Thankyou very much my friend. And, thankyou for thinking up the idea of a Father's day story. It's a little memorial to my dad.
ReplyDeleteSam's team won and now he is in the final game for the 'junior hockey cup'.The score was 8to3 and his team is favored for the championship. He is very proud.
Nana enjoyed reading it all together. She said I wasn't totally accurate on everything but I think I was close enough.
I have another early morning tomorrow so I will turn in early and wish you a wonderful day with all the dads in your family and if you still have energy left to talk tomorrow evening( if you're not too drunk)I will check in and see if you want to gossip...Luv you.. and thanks for allowing me to run Daffodils again. It meant a lot to me.I can't look at a daffodil now without crying.I still miss him so...thanks for being my friend...J
ReplyDeleteI am so glad Nana liked it.maybe she will fill you in on the rest.Everyone here love it,even Susan.
ReplyDeleteGil had to put his 2 cents in.
You are so very welcome my friend.
ReplyDeleteWe are in this together,I get the ball rolling and it turns out great. So you get some rest and enjoy tomorrow and wish Brian a Happy Father's Day.
Nana is beautiful.
We will talk tomorrow, rest well and sweet dreams. Nite...PIC...LUV...NEE
Hi Pic,
ReplyDeleteDon't know if you are on-line tonight, just want to say hello and hope you and family had a great time...We are going to the hotel about 1:00am, my time and I am going to give my man his Father's Day present...hahaha
I hope you had as nice a day as I had,Nee.
ReplyDeleteThe weather was glorious.A lot of the family went up to the lake to Jaye and Peter's place. Some of the younger ones still had exams and couldn't spare the study time but they called to speak with Brian. Although Jordan was there. She is very sweet. She has a calculus exam tomorrow, but she came for her grandpa.Steve and mary were there with Shayne, who looked very poorly.I believe they said he goes in hospital on Thursday or Friday for his exploratory operation. Then we will know for sure whether it's time for the stomach pump. He can't struggle on like he is.But he rallied enough to play with the twins and joke with me and even swim off the boat with he rest of the family.
Brian had a wonderful Father's Day.There was an outpouring of love for him. They all adore him.
I am so happy you had a great day and Brian enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteI will have Shayne in my prayers ,he is a brave young man.I know Brian was so happy.
ReplyDeleteHow was your day.Did you take all the fathers out for dinner?
ReplyDeleteHow is peter and Mary holding up?
ReplyDeleteI didn't know if I would catch you,I left you a note about where I am going tonight, I have my babies in bed and dad is going to babysit.
I didn't get your note .Are you going out?
ReplyDeleteMy day will start at 1:00am my time tonght, hahaha yes they all had a great time.
ReplyDeleteI just read your note.Have a great time and tie a red ribbon around yourself.
ReplyDeleteI put it here somewhere...We are going to the Hotel tonight at 1:00am my time,I will give Gil his present.hahah
ReplyDeleteI will be very good.
ReplyDeleteNo you won't.
ReplyDeleteI think he is excited..I have been a very good girl,I will even wear panties.
ReplyDeleteJust don't make too much noise and keep everyone in the hotel up.And make sure you can both walk out of there tomorrow and don't have to be carried out by para-medics.
ReplyDeleteHow long do you think Shayne will be in the hosiptal? Is it close to you?
ReplyDeleteHow long do you think Shayne will be in the hosiptal? Is it close to you?
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you try something new to night?
ReplyDeleteTackle him , throw him down on the bed, rip his clothes off and rape him.Hmmm...Maybe you should tie him up first.
I will try to behave ,one thing I know I won't come back pregnant.hahah
ReplyDeleteThe hospital is an hour from here, but we may not go.I think he will be in for a few days only, unless they find that they can actually do something surgically for him, then the surgery will be more extensive and he will have to stay in and be monitored.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone like the Major's story, stats jumped, and we have a lot more visitors.I think everyone here has read it more than twice.
ReplyDeleteDoes that make you a little more relaxed, knowing you won't get pregnant.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you should go either,it would be too stressful on you with Brian at work. You would worry yourself.
ReplyDeleteThe major was a good man. I didn't dwell too much on his alcoholism. That would spoil all the good things about him.People would overlook all his wonderful qualities. He was quite a man and according to Nana, a marvelous lover. She always had a smile on her face in the morning.
ReplyDeleteOh yes indeed. If I was younger I would be trying to get pregnant, but my age anything can happen.
ReplyDeleteI won't keep you from packing all your sex toys and leather lingerie and stimulating massage oils.
ReplyDeleteWe can talk tomorrow.I hope the evening is wonderful for both of you.
When I was pregnant with Gilly I had all kinds of tests,no matter what I was keeping my baby, but I was blessed,I am so thankful.
ReplyDeleteAwwwww shit, that's been pack since 6:pm..hahaha
ReplyDeleteI agree, you have been blessed. There is no need to push your luck and take a chance that might be dangerous to your health.
ReplyDeleteYou have to be here and be strong for the two that you already have.
I have 2 drafts in posts, one is about Mel and the other is about Gil and I ,you can post them if you want to.
ReplyDeleteYou are going to wet your panties on the one about Gil and I.hahaha
ReplyDeleteI think the Daffodil story went quite well.I received a number of compiments, which surprised me because it's a sad story.I really didn't think too many people would care about the death of an old man.
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine what the story of you and Gil is about.I'll remove my panties right now.
ReplyDeleteYou never know what problems someone has until you walk a mile in their shoes.
ReplyDeleteI think the Major used alcohol as a pain killer.Just plain fact.
You are in it too.hahaha It's very short about 3/4 lines long.
ReplyDeleteMel is about him ranting in church.
I think that knowing he could die at any time and just waiting for it to happen drove him out of his mind. The pain of knowing he was dying at such a young age made him drink. He figured he would rather be drunk than sober when he died.
ReplyDeleteWhen he found out he was going to live it was too late.
Do you mean the anti-Semitic rant about how terrible the Jews are.
ReplyDeleteYou will be surprise how many you touched with "Daffodils" .It made me think of the good times I had with my daddy. To see it in print,to see the love you put into your Dad's story,Jeannie ,it is so heart warming.
ReplyDeleteThey say the rant about the Jews and his DUI started it all, hell that was just when they notice,Mel has been crazy a long time.
ReplyDeleteI think MEl is a guy on the way down.He had a meteoric rise and achieved huge success. Now his star is fading and I wish he would do it more gracefully and conduct himself in his private life with more consideration and conscience.
ReplyDeleteI know some people taht has cancer and take chemotherapy smoke pot to help with the pain.
ReplyDeleteThat's true and the pot also helps to control the nausea too.
ReplyDeleteMel is only 53 years old, same as DC,I hope Gil had his before me,if not ,I really pity him.Because I am not going to lay down and roll over.
ReplyDeleteI know people have mid-life crisis,I asked my sister-in-laws did my brothers have affairs, they said that was just an excuse men use trying to get away with their shit.
ReplyDeleteI think Gil was ready to settle down when he met you.In his comment to me he said he hopes you and he are together for fifty some odd years like my mom and dad.
ReplyDeleteI bet a lot of Gil's friends in Las Vegas/Reno said the same about me.I never heard anything anyone said.
ReplyDeleteI was surprise when Nan told me he commented,he just reads the posts,he is a sweetie sometime. He calls me baby, and when he is upset with me,he says Jean`ne,I go hide.hahaha
ReplyDeleteYou were ready to settle down too.And look how you took to being a homemaker and moomy.
ReplyDeleteAre you all still getting along in Sis's house together? No Quarrels with your relatives?
ReplyDeleteWill you check the posts out and post them for me?
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to help.I'll post them when we sign off.I'll do one tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteWe all are getting along great, you would never know all of us was here.I am in my old bedroom and I have a patio that makes it private.Everyone gets along, except Susan. She wants you to feel sorry for her old ass.
ReplyDeleteI didn' t know she lived in the house with you.Doesn't she have her own house?
ReplyDeleteThis was good for me,I needed to get off my butt...
ReplyDeleteI wanted the Major's and Ian's story told and all in one piece,so I knew I had to get off my butt and do something. You told me the more I do,the better I would get.Well I am getting my nerves up to try things,if I throw it into space so be it. I got the stories I wanted. I have learn so much from you and this is just the beginning.
It sounds like your dad built a very large house.Good thing he did.
ReplyDeleteI bet the family is happy you are going to be so close. And Jill can be close to her little cousin so they can grow up together just like you and Nan did.
No Susan don't live here ,Sis would kill Susan's husband,he is a lazy S.O.B.He always think we owe him something.Susan got her pary of the land like everyone else.
ReplyDeleteLarry,that's Susan hubby.
You are getting better and you are great at organizing things. We are a good team and we balance each other nicely. I am expressing my naughty side more openly since I met you. I nver thought I would do that.
ReplyDeleteThe house has 6 bedrooms/4 baths.
ReplyDeleteThere was daddy---Chris---me--Sis--and her three kids,Michael,Jr.--Richard and Nan..
You know how to tell a good, colorful story. You just need to gain a little more confidence in your own ability.
ReplyDeleteLadies can be naughty and nice,it makes you feel good.I feel good when I talk to you,I only had three people I could really let my hair down with is Sis/Nan/Chris..Chris is my hero.He was always there for me,I am so glad he and gil hit it right off, they are like brothers.
ReplyDeleteI hope you always keep your daddy's house in the family.
ReplyDeleteThe old family house in Jersey is filled with family mementos going back several generations. My aunt who still lives there sent me some of my grandfather's and great grandfather's things and a watch belonging to my great great grandfather.
Awww now you are giving me the big head.(GIGGLES)You wait til I learn how to get the videos and music,I am going to be a bad ass ,yes-sir-ree-bop.hahaha
ReplyDeleteNan talks exactly like she was your sister, even when she teases you.
ReplyDeleteI bet those things have a story behind them..We have some old things from Josie's time.Dad have some old things back in Reno that his grandparnts brought from the old country..I ahave all his mom's jewelry.
ReplyDeleteI bet you treasure all those things. It gives you something to pass to Jill and Gilly.
ReplyDeleteI,m going to sign off now and I hope your night is beautiful and excitng. You gotta keep that old spark alive and well girl.Give him a night to remember.
Naturally I will want all the details tomorrow...HA!
Luv you...Have fun...PIC
Nan is a year older, she is a devil also.We are about the same height, everyone is tall except Sis,she is only 5'6" tall. But she rules the family and boy she can be hell at times.
ReplyDeleteWill do ...Goodnite sweetie...
ReplyDeleteLuv...PIC.....Nee
