The death toll was revised down to 16 from the 20 that was previously reported, a spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management said. Children were among the dead. She added that officials did not know how many people were missing "as we don't know how many people were there." Television images showed cabins reduced to rubble and mobile homes and vehicles overturned by the waters. Survivors described how the water hit "like a tsunami" in the middle of the night, demolishing wooden cabins and carrying away vehicles and tents with people inside. The Ouachita National Forest in Arkansas, is popular with hikers and families on holiday in recreational vehicles.
A massive rescue operation involving helicopters, boats and horses was launched in the rugged, mountainous region. The worst hit area was the Albert Pike campground, where hundreds of people were staying. Two dozen campers were treated in hospital and a further 60 were rescued having fled to higher ground. Officials said more than 40 people were still unaccounted for.
According to the Red Cross there may have been up to 300 people in the area when the floods hit.Officials did not know exactly how many campers there were because many set up base at scattered sites across the hiking country.

The floods happened after two rivers, the Caddo and Little Missouri, rose by six metres (20ft) in the night, following heavy rain.
Janice McRae, who lives in the park, said: "A huge amount of water came down almost like a tsunami. A lot of families got separated. There were campers floating down the river, vehicles floating down the river, and trees washing up. We rescued two boys off the top of a cabin. Their grandparents were in the water and we got them out. It was a while before anyone could get in here because we had cave-ins on the road. One woman put her kids in a pick-up but before they could get it in reverse it started floating away. Another car crashed into them and threw them into the water. She was hanging on to a tree in the darkness."

Stacy McNeil from Marshall, Texas, a camper who survived, said: "We huddled together, and prayed like we'd never prayed before."
The campground was packed with holidaying families, many of them from Louisiana and Texas.
Arkansas police spokesman Bill Sadler said: "The primary mission is to get the living out of there that have been trapped."
Officials brought a refrigerated truck to the forest to act as a temporary morgue.

The Ouachita National Forest sprawls over 1.8 million acres (700,000 hectares) of western Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma.Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe said: "They probably had no warning that the water was coming. It was a very rapid flash flood that inundated that area."
It seems that people are not safe anywhere any more. Climate change is a bitch.

ReplyDeletePIC...this is your fourth one to graduate...huh???
Was the weather nice so you could take pictures in the garden afer the ceremony??
Now we know Brian is on the road to recovery...you know he's not going to do anything but talk, he has just what he wants right there with him and that's you my dear friend...remember what his friends/bosses at work told you.
Now what man would spread eagle in bed butt-ass naked and go to sleep if he wasn't true-blue.
Don't it make you feel good to know he want no one but you, girl you are so lucky...
How did the pant's go??? I know you didn't have any trouble and it was quite easy don't you think ???
I bet Brian was really surprise to know they wasn't to tight, and you can take them up the same way you let them out.
How's Nana resting???
Glad you had a nice time and was able to sit on the deck and have a cool drink to finished the evening off....
This flood was unexpected and came in real fast...it is a beautiful spot and a really calming place to go and relax, so quiet and peaceful, we was not far from where flood happen when we took our mini holiday early this year, I like going up there but don't think I will be going back soon, when I seen it on the news I cried.
I bet you wasn't mad about the 'ROCK' flirting you know he's going to bring all his tools home to you and only you will ever use his poker.[giggles] But hey, that's just me...Hahaha
Hey Pic...I had a nice weekend so far, no rain and Gilly kept his pants on but he tried to get them off...I guess like father like son as they say.
ReplyDeleteI had a nice thime Friday night we went to Sam's Town casino to do a little gambling with some friends, Sam's is accross the walkway from the Eldarado.
I won about $50/60 dallars at on the slots...Gil played poker and won more than he played, he said he was bout $20/30 dallors ahead, but knowing him he won much more,he said with his winning he was going to take his little women out for ice cream and I asked him what about his little man and he said Gilly do whatever he pleases.
Our weather is sunny and hot, but it will rain in the near future...this climate change is a bitch.
Did you read the post about Simon, he a sweetheart after all.
I baked the Lemon cake for today and I guess I will make the pretty Strawberry cake for tomorrow. Gil asked if I wanted to go out tonight and I told him we was going to watch movies with my babies and have popcorn .
Pic, am I getting old?? I like staying home ... I think they have come to an agreement with Dad/aunt Mae, Dad told them if he died they would have to wait until my babies come of age because he left everything he has to them...the house in Reno he's leaving to Gil and they both thinks it's a great idea about what you said about turning it into a memorial to Rosa.
Well Pic, I got the names and now I'm wondering if you want me to try 'sassy Pants and Celebrity Spanking first...you know I'm no good at this...but I'm good at throwing things into cyber space.
I'm excited about the new blog and being a stay at home mom.[giggles]

Hi PIC, the pants came out fine, thankyou. I'll do some of his others.Probably not as neat as you could do it, but I don't sew much.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had fun at the casino( and after the casino). What is your favorite game?Do you prefer the tables or the slots??I want to go to the horse races. I havn't been this year. I love it. I'm good at picking winners. I have no luck in the casino.
I thought you might know the area of the flash flood. What a horrible thing to happen in the night. They had no warning. They haven't found everyone yet.
I wasn't worried about the 'Rock'. He likes to talk to women and he was bored with all the speeches. I let him get me later.
I love the way Gil puts aside time for his little women.I bet they adore their daddy.I love that you would prefer to spend time at home with your babies. You're not getting older, you're just happy with your life. That's wonderful.
Sammy is goalie tomorrow and he asked that I bring my camera. So I guess I don't get to sleep in tomorrow morning.I'll have the honor of sitting with Bio at the auditorium so I can spend some time with Jakey. J and P are up at the lake.
I'm glad you're having a nice weekend. Enjoy the sunshine while you can.See you soon...Hugs...PIC
You gals sure have lovely families and everything! I am envious a bit, but in a good way.
