CSI Las Vegas...Back on Top

Last year, FOX's "House" claimed the title of most-watched TV program in the world, but this weekend a different TV drama reclaimed its status as the most popular show among international audiences. CBS' long-running "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" toppled "House" with more than 73.8 million viewers worldwide, according to the esteemed Monte-Carlo Television Festival.

This isn't the first time the ten-year-old forensics crime drama has been declared the world's most popular show by the festival - in fact, the "CSI" franchise has dominated almost every year of the International TV Audience Award's five-year history. "CSI: Miami" was the first show to be honored as the most-watched drama internationally in 2006, and its forerunner "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" took the award in 2007 and 2008. But the original "CSI" was bested in 2009 by "House," the same year it suffered a significant drop in ratings when the show's central character Gil Grissom (William Petersen) left in its ninth season.Although its U.S. ratings have begun to climb as people tune in to see Laurence Fishburne take over as the show's main character, it still hasn't wholly regained its prominence in the American market. But apparently when the world wants to watch a crime drama, "CSI" is still its number-one choice.

The world's most-watched comedy has faced similar troubles retaining American viewers in recent years. The Monte-Carlo fest named ABC's "Desperate Housewives" the most popular comedy worldwide, even though American viewers have been gradually tuning out for some time. This international adoration for the "Desperate Housewives" might give some consolation to the women of Wisteria Lane, especially after the show hit its all-time ratings low last month in key demographics.

As for "CSI's" future, box office domination could be the next step. Departed lead character William Petersen told fans that Gil Grissom will be leaving his fingerprints on the silver screen in an upcoming "CSI" movie. While production hasn't started yet, Petersen told TV Guide the jump to the big screen will happen while the show is still on-air: "We can't wait for ‘CSI' to end or Grissom will be about 90."

  1. Well, CSI Vegas back on top. That actually doesn't surprise me. The show took a dive when Jorja Fox and William Petersen both left the show, but since Jorja's return and Laurence Fishburne being added to the cast, the show has once again become fresh. I had doubts on Mr. Fishburne, but he is actually quite good. The writing even after 9 seasons is still very, very good. And the story lines make sense, are reasonable for the most part.

The whole Grissom/Sara romance too, worked for this show. UNLIKE the whole piece of crap on Miami regarding Eric/Calleigh.

The reason it worked? IMO, the way the writers worked it. The viewers knew at the beginning that Sara and Grissom had a past together-that it likely involved a romance of some sort that ended at some point. And then over the next seasons, the pair had hit and miss chances with rekindling their romance, eventually culminating back into a full fledged romance around Season 7 (i think) when at the end of an episode we see Sara walking out of Grissom's bathroom in a robe.

There are many problems with Miami. First, it is mostly flash-fancy computers, fancy clothes, the constant half-naked women whose cleavage really, turns me off. Since when do CSIs wear high heels, stilettos to crime scenes? And Calleigh's and Natalia's long hair blowing in the wind? Would that not corrupt evidence?

By far the worst problem though is the WRITING. GAD, the first few seasons I really quite enjoyed. The characters acted NORMAL. Now, WTF???

Seriously, if they want the show to stay on the air, hire me as a writer and I am willing to place bets on the table I can turn the whole pile of crap around. But, not like they'll listen anyway.

I hope to God Season 9 is the last season because I have a feeling it is going to be all about Eric/Calleigh boinking each other mostly.

And DC? He was really nice to me when I tripped and fell on my face, but there is no hiding it. He is a very unhappy man, lonely from what I think anyway.

Anyway, girls, so sorry for the ranting...please forgive.

Nicely said...CSI:M went down the toliet. Peterson was the star of the show and needed a love interest beside his bugs...It was done in good taste and you could tell they cared for each other...

DC and his love interests didn't seem to have anything in common.
Now for him looking or being lonely, he has no one to blame but himself.
The only one DC had chemistry with was Yelina (Sophie Milo).
DC had some good ladies in his life and he treated them like shit and poor Margaret put up with his shit (9 years)until he got his bimbo (Liza) pregnant, DC cheated on Marg through-out the time they was together even carrying one of his porn dates out with them.
I like to bash his old fart-ass because he will never learn and I pity his next woman.
But hey, thats just me...keeping it real.

  3. Oh I realize he is to blame for his own problems-including that of loneliness and being unhappy. We all are to some extent, in charge of how happy or how lonely we are in life.

I don't read the tabloids but it is common knowledge about his affairs, the whole Liza thing and of course, what's her name...Amina. Who seems to have disappeared somewhere.

Nothing would ever come of this but I guess my heart ached a little for him. Fool that is me perhaps, but it did.

  4. Good rant Lina and I agree with almost everything you said.CSI-LV has always been my favorite, even during times of transition. It has had consistently good writing and acting and the ensemble of performers works like a well oiled machine. You can tell they are old friends.I hear it is a very happy set. Not like the CSI-M set which is rife with squabbles and jealousy, most of which was attributed to David Caruso by our reliable sources.

Also, I agree the focus on CSI-M is on all the wrong things.Scenery, music and girls in bikinis. The CSI's are not believable because of their hair, makeup and wardrobe. The science they use is all fantasy and not very believable. It's more like Baywatch than a srious crime detection show.

Lina...It's nothing wrong about feeling for a person even if it's their own fault...but it seems to me that DC should have learned something from his mistakes.
Everyone makes them but you are suppose to learn from them and If you don't you are a fool or just plain stupid.

Oh yes, as for Amina she's still hanging on DC haven't replaced her yet..
Tabloids have some information and more times irt's preety close to the truth ...but it's always late.
We have our own sources, but DC is being a good boy ,but he will break out soon.
Like I said before I love bashing DC's old ass he's so easy he never changes.
But hey , that's just me and to each their own.

  6. Oh, not sure whether you've heard anything about this down where you all are girls, but the guy that played Jesse Cardoza on Miami...Eddie Cibrian is his real name, was fired from the show.

    Ouch.

Personally, I liked him. Fresh blood. The studios are saying that he is being let go because they want to focus on CORE character-namely the whole STUPID Eric/Calleigh romance crap, but that is not the real reason he was fired...uh uh.

Lina...thanks for the up-date about who it was was getting fired, I was sure it was going to be Cibrian and like you said he did bring sometning new .
The post about the cliff hanger says that not even the actors will know who was fired until they return to work..
But hey girl, good going on finding out who was let go.[giggles]
Now I know you are right, the same old shit with E/C what a waste of 50 mintues.
