The Putin 'offer' to Trump is an effort to expose Russian leakers—and kill them

Yes, Republicans, Trump Is In Fact A Corrupt, Traitorous Russian Tool. But You Knew That.
The Puppet and his Master.
David Remnick from the New Yorker on the remarkable events over the last 24 hours::

Trump’s penchant for bald deception and incoherence is not an aberration. It is his daily practice. The vague sense of torpor and gloom that so many Americans have shouldered these past two years derives precisely from the constancy of Trump’s galling statements and actions.

And yet what happened in Helsinki on Monday will not be so easily forgotten. Just as the President’s comments following the torchlit white-supremacist march last year in Charlottesville made it clear that racism was at the core of his character and his political strategy, the contemptible remarks he delivered alongside of Vladimir Putin seemed to mark a turning point, even for some of his most ardent defenders. In the course of a single European journey, Trump set out to humiliate the leaders of Western Europe and declare them “foes”; to fracture long-standing military, economic, and political alliances; and to absolve Russia of its attempts to undermine the 2016 election. He did so clearly, repeatedly, and with conviction. Republicans in Congress (but not enough of them) and a selection of commentators on Fox News declared that Trump’s performance in Helsinki had been disgraceful.

One of the hardest things for any human being to admit is that he/she was wrong. It’s a kick in the stomach. It basically amounts to admitting you’re a fool. You’ve been snookered. You’ve been taken.

If any Republican voter could validly claim that excuse, I’d be happy to listen. But I probably wouldn’t believe it.

Republicans—and by that I mean every single person who voted for this person-- knew what they were buying into already. They winked at the racism, chortled at the misogyny, and pulled that lever anyway because they wanted to stick it to the rest of Americans who were forced to watch in silent horror at this abomination to our Democracy. When Hillary Clinton brought up the fact that Trump was a Russian puppet, they laughed and laughed.

Some of them were acting out on their worst impulses. Some of them were all about “shaking things up.”  Some of them were all about “abortion” or that some brown or black person was going to be allowed to get a big-screen TV and maybe raise a family just like them. Maybe some of them thought that the American experiment was just a means of “entertainment.” And for some of them, maybe it still is.

They just didn’t care. Didn’t give a damn about the rest of the country. Didn’t care about their own children’s futures, for that matter. All they cared about was themselves.

They just never dreamed their chosen Leader’s utter betrayal of all things American would be so nakedly obvious that he’d sell his own country out in front of a billion sets of eyes across the world.

But here we are. We’re stuck with a traitor in the White House.  One beholden to a man whom historians believe came to power by blowing up an apartment complex full of people.

Because you put him there.

You own this, Republicans, whatever your “reasons” were.  Maybe this is the “new normal” for you. I just hope you can justify that to your children.

Those of us who actually care about the country will see you on November 6.

Bye

  1. Jeannie & Baby,
We're a long ways from Watergate days when repubs confronted Nixon and told him we will no longer support you. It's over, resign. Now we have a group of spineless cowards who are so terrified of their seriously misguided base that no matter how grave the offense they can't muster more than a weak tea rebuke. They could do something. They could censure him. They could impose heavier sanctions on Russia. They could pass legislation preventing Trump from firing Mueller. They could knock it off with making the FBI their enemy. They could and should do all kinds of things. The fact they did nothing to put a stop to this totally unfit disgrace to our nation POTUS will be their legacy for all time to come.
Their claim that they can’t do anything concrete to oppose T%$#@ because their voters might turn on them really galls me. How about growing a spine and LEADING your voters back to some sort of reason and sanity? Hmm? How about showing them that racism is wrong. That screwing the poor is wrong. That destroying the environment is wrong. That ripping children from their parents- and not giving them back- is wrong. When/if the GOP politicians are willing to do that, we could have a functioning two-party system again. As it is, we have to vote out as many of these cretins as possible and break their strangle-hold on our government- for ever!
The sanctions already voted for against Russia were never implemented by Trump to begin with. More sanctions against Russia wouldn’t help. Putin and his oligarchs have something on Trump and it should be interesting how the Repubs in congress react when all of this comes out. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’ll happen before the midterms.
    Just my humble opinion

  2. Howdy Big Boy ,
I really hope in my heart of hearts that Dartagnan is correct. But a small voice inside, that is rarely wrong, tells me otherwise. The GOP is not spineless, it is frozen in terror of Putin. Far too many of the R-Congress is on the ruble payroll. Eight of them went to Moscow on the 4th of July. What can you make of that ?
I get ----- tRUMP is owned and will come when called. We all saw what we saw in Helsinki and heard what we heard. There is only one possible thought about the Trump press interview. He is acting as if he was the naughty boy caught by the headmaster, and he will do as he is told in front of the entire school. Trump played his part too well. He demonstrated to Putin that he will be a good boy. And at the same time told the world what a weak fool he is, and has always been. How many hard hours of work were needed, just after a transatlantic flight, to come up with the one word difference that makes the Helsinki dumpster dive all right. Please sell me the big bridge now while my mind is still in a scramble.
That 71% of his base believes that Trump is innocent is a given. Long after Nixon resigned at least 25% of the nation thought that Watergate pure political nonsense. So what? Even during the Revolutionary War a huge percentage of the nation was still loyal to England. Good thing George Washington did not have polling-we might still be a colony of the Crown.
Got a surprise for you Ookey Dookey

  3. This was a deeply emotional article by a disillusioned and broken hearted American. I felt their pain and the loss of that anchor Americans always seemed to have, fashioned from pride, patriotism and sense of right.
Watergate was as nothing compared to the anarchy Chump is creating. Is the Grand Old Party terrified of the great unwashed or are they drunk with power? I think it's the power trip they are on. The opportunity may never come their way again, to be in control of the Congress, the Senate and probably the Supreme Court.
They know they are on a doomed trip but they intend to ride it to the end and wring as much as they can out of it.
Firing Mueller would be a strategic mistake and would prove, like nothing else, that Trump and his cronies are crooks and traitors. At that point, would the Democrats not have a case for impeachment ? It seems the Democrats are gagged, hog-tied and completely useless up to this point.

We have been seeing Mitch Landrieu giving interviews lately. He seems like a very straight-up guy. Is he going to run or isn't he? He didn't give a definitive answer. He would be a good candidate. He would have to be very strong and bring back integrity and honesty to the office. What a mess the next Prez will have to clean up.
Trump is so paranoid, he is convincing people that the enemy is within. It's a mass conspiracy to delegitimize his administration. It's 'Alice Through the Looking Glass'...all friends are foes and foes are friends. The United is gone from United States. He has splintered and fractured your country. And he has this thing about tyrants and dictators. He's a big fan and I think it's partly sexual. But when Putin fucks this guy, you all get fucked.
    Love you BAW
    Enjoy your surprise Humble.
