Soldier Opens Fire At Fort Hood; 4 Dead, 16 Injured
Four people are confirmed dead and at least 16 people are injured following a shooting at the Fort Hood army post Wednesday evening, according to the House Homeland Security Chair and U.S. Representative from Texas Michael McCaul. CBS News confirms the shooter is among the dead and was killed by a self-inflicted wound. The shooter has been identified as a soldier. CBS's David Martin reports the shooter was a soldier. He has been identified as 34-year-old Ivan Lopez. The shooting reportedly started as the result of a dispute between soldiers.
KWTX also reports approximately 20 rounds were fired. The FBI, Bell County Sheriff's Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety all responded to the shooting.
Fort Hood has sent a tweet asking all personnel to take shelter in place. Sirens have been going off on the post to alert people to about the situation.
The all-clear has now sounded at the base and cars are leaving the complex. US military spokesman Lt Gen Mark Milley told reporters that there was so far no indication that the shootings were related to terrorism but it had not been ruled out. Gen Milley said that the suspect had served in Iraq and was being assessed to see if he had post-traumatic stress disorder. He said that the gunman was suffering from depression and anxiety.
