Canada's Role in Afghanistan May change After Withdrawl

OTTAWA - The U.S., Britain and NATO have presented Prime Minister Stephen Harper with their plan calling for Canadian Forces personnel  to stay in Kabul to train the Afghan army for three years beyond the withdrawl deadline.
The foreign governments stepped softly because they knew Harper had made strong public pronouncements that  no Canadian soldiers would remain in Afghanistan after July 2011. One diplomat said, "I wouldn't want to describe it as being pressured or being leaned on. We all know Prime Minister Harper has very clear views about what he wants to do, and a very clear picture of what's going on in Afghanistan, so there's no point in us trying to put pressure. " He added, "We identified fairly early on, if Canada felt it could, taking on some kind of substantive training role to the 2014 mark would be great."

Sources have discovered that Canada, indeed is seriously considering sending  1,000 special personnel to Kabul to bolster NATO training efforts. On Monday, the commander of NATO's training mission in Afghanistan said the alliance faces a shortfall of 900 trainers and, if they don't find enough from member countries, the eventual withdrawal of international troops could be stalled. Those numbers mean Canada has the potential to play a good-guy role in saving NATO's foundering training program.  The allies are aware that Canada has  sacrificed enough on the front lines of Kandahar but they are still needed in other capacities.

They also courted the support of Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and his foreign affairs critic, Bob Rae, because they understood that Harper was not prepared to risk his minority government without some political support from across floor of the House of Commons.
"We recognize politically this is not the world's greatest vote winner," said the diplomat, adding the hope that "behind the scenes, the opposition and the government could work something out on this."
Ignatieff said Monday he can't support the Harper government's sudden proposal to extend Canada's military mission in Afghanistan until he gets all the details. "The devil is in the details. How many troops, for how long, in what role, with what allies, with what mission?" Ignatieff said.
He also  said it's clear the Harper government is "scrambling" to respond to international pressure at the 11th hour before a Nov. 18-20 NATO leaders' summit in Lisbon, Portugal.

It is clear Canada's allies would like the training problem, and Canada's future in Afghanistan, to be settled by the time Harper and his fellow NATO leaders meet in Lisbon. Come on Canada, let's help for a while longer. Teach the Afghans to defend themselves, after we are gone, and ferret out terrorists in their own country.

Sent you an e-mail 7:30pm my time.

I hate this damn war, a lot of our boys were just out of high school , tell me who taught them to fight? The longer we stay, the less the Afghans will do depending on others to fight their battles. But hey, that's just me..You tell them Mrr. Harper

  8. MR Harper has been our Prime Minister since 2006. He is our leader like your president. Don't feel bad, there are few Americans who are interested in our politics, except the American politicians who want our oil, water, power, and resources.

  13. Your Prez is doing his damndest but it will never be enough. Every small mistake or misjudgement will be blown out of proportion by his dissenters and racists and used against him until they get people to listen. And Mr Obama will be no more.A great pity.

It's rumored Obama will be a one time Prez.
Maybe that's what America needs someone to keep us in hell like Bush...Obama has lost a lot of weight, he's doing his best and he's good for the country but we as a country don't deserve him .

  22. That's exactly what I said to J when she was three and saw black people for th e first time. We were on an elevator with a black couple and their baby and she shrieked at the top of her lungs,
"Mommy! Those people are black! Why are they black??"

I said that people are like flowers, they come in all colors and that's what made us beautiful.

well I got a letter that we have to go to court Friday and finalize Jonny's adoption papers and then my life will get back to normal.

Since meeting me , have my life been normal to you?

    ReplyDelete
  24. The black couple were very nice and smiled at her and at me and told me I put it very nicely. I was a bit embarrased but kids do that. They come out with the worst things at the worst time. J still stood there staring at them with horror as if they were painted or tarred so I guess I didn't impress her as much as I impressed myself.

  25. Anonymous10:57:00 PM

What a wonderful thing to tell your baby and that way she undestood. It wasn't many blacks in small towns in Canada I have heard and you have to explain to your little ones ...but here it is common place and stil we are racist.

  30. Canada is made up of many many ethnic groups. We were settled by the English and the French but it is such a huge country and has so few people that we encouraged immigration from the four corners of the world.
A lot of the black people we have here are descendants of the slaves who escaped to Canada on the "underground Railway".

  31. I'm putting the kettle on for tea. Max is staring at me, willing me to do something with his mind. I don't have a fucking clue what it is. I asked him if he wanted to go out, but, no.

I'm told all Ethnic groups there are treated the same, what a nice place to live.
Now I understand why your taxes are so high.

  55. I was nervous and babbled a lot when you called me. I'm not usually like that but I am shy with strangers. I had to keep telling myself that it was Nee and we know each other better than most friends do in a lifetime.

    Another call would be fun.

  56. Anonymous12:09:00 AM

I think he was very cute and if one of my boys wanted to dress up in their favorite anything I would let them. It don't mean the little boy will be gay, hell he's just a kid.

Nan left a note on the post about him and I think she nailed it.

I will warmed you , but dad is not coming as long as there's snow.
