With the help of 23 industrious doctors and two operating rooms, a Houston woman became the mother of quintuplets this past weekend. It took 23 doctors , 8 delivery rooms and 21 hours to get the quintuplets into the world.
Thirty-year-old Veronica Mayorga-Real delievered the three girls and two boys by Casarean section Saturday at Children's Memorial Hermann Hosiptal in Houston. The babies weighed between 2 pounds 14 ounces and nearly 4 pounds. Dr. Ursula Nawab said the babies required no support beyond oxygen, and two are already breathing on their own.The infants were born at 29 weeks, which is 11 weeks premature , and will have to stay in the hosipyal for at least another six weeks.
Mayorga-Real and her husband were using fertility drugs, but did not do artificial inseminations, the Houston Chronicle reported.The couple already have an 8-year-old son and had been trying for five years to conceive another child.
One of the most serious complications of pregnancies involving multiple births is premature labor and delivery, according to the American Congress of Gynecologists. A
Babies that are premature can have an increased risk of infection, developmental disabilities, neurologic , motor and learning disabilities. There is an increased rick of cerebral palsy with prematurity, said Laura Corio. But multiple births can also be hard on the mother, a New York City based obstetrician-gyneoclogist.
Doctors recommended Mayorga-Real remove three of the embryos to improve the chances of the others , but she said no. "Any reduction would have to be done by God,"she told the Chronicle.
"Mothers with multiple pregnancies can suffer, from postpartum, depression and psychiaric disorders at a higher incidence," Corio said. Breast feeding can be difficult because of the immaturity of the babies sucking response....The parents need a lot of support throughout the pregnancy and postpartum .

It's probably much better for Nan and James to be a little separate and have more privacy.
