Minions; We want more minions. There are dozens of them in "Despicable Me" and if they don't prompt an outpouring of action figures and games, it'd be a shame. "Despicable Me" is an animation original -- one of those films that grab you right away and make you love it like an old friend.
Steve Carell provides the voice ( and charactebr- brilliantly, I might add) of Gru, a major league baddie who has stolen the Statue of Liberty (from Las Vegas, not New York), threatened worldwide order and settled into a kind of villainy that can't be rocked. That is, of course, until a rival comes up with a shrink gun that bumps Gru from the top spot.In order to regain his status, Gru decides to steal the moon.Unfortunately, three orphan girls come peddling cookies. He tries to use them in his evil plot, then finds himself caught in a world he can't control.
Directors Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin have plotted this as well as any Pixar film. It has plenty of charming characters -- and those minions. Charged with helping Dru, the little yellow guys show more personality that most human actors. They teeter around the edges of the story and steal it in the end. Don't leave before the film is over -- particularly if you've gone to the 3-D edition. The minions make such good use of the technique you'll want to see everything pop out.
Still, 3-D is just frosting on an already delicious cake. Carell is outstanding as the pseudo-European Gru. Jason Segel is smart as his rival Vector. And Julie Andrews is so unrecognizable as Gru's mom you'll wonder who's really doing the voice.
"Despicable Me" is right up there with "Toy Story 3." It's proof animation can be more real than live-action. You will undoubtably love it as much as your kids...GO SEE.
