Latest and Best closeups of Pluto

Saturday, December 5, 2015 - NASA has released some of the clearest photos of Pluto ever taken. Captured by the New Horizons spacecraft on July 14, the sequence of images show a wide variety of the planet's glacial terrain along a strip spanning 80 km wide. Snapshots reveal northwest of Pluto's "heart" region, across the icy al-Idrisi mountains and through Sputnik Planum's plains.
It was the spacecraft's closest flyby, capturing photos at a distance from Earth that ranged from 7.5 billion to 4.28 billion km.

This highest-resolution image from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft reveals new details of Pluto’s rugged, icy cratered plains.

“These new images give us a breathtaking, super-high resolution window into Pluto’s geology,” said New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern in a statement. “Nothing of this quality was available for Venus or Mars until decades after their first flybys; yet at Pluto we’re there already – down among the craters, ice fields and mountains – less than five months after flyby! The science we can do with these images is simply unbelievable.”At 250 to 280 feet per pixel, the images are six times better the resolution of the global Pluto map the New Horizons team put together earlier this year.
More of these stunning high resolution photos are expected to come in over the next few days, so stay tuned.
Here are some of the best close-ups:

San Bernardino...Mass Shooting...Both Gunmen Dead

California Massacre Suspects Dropped Off Baby
Syed Rizwan Farook
Perpetrators caught
Both gunmen were killed after shootout

According to a Congressional Research Service analysis released in July; the U.S. from 1999 to 2013 averaged 21 mass shootings per year in which four or more people were shot and killed.  More than 1,500 people were killed in those shootings.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. Associated Press - California gunman Syed Rizwan Farook had been in contact with known Islamic extremists on social media, a U.S. intelligence official said Thursday, and police said he and his wife had enough bullets and bombs to slaughter hundreds when they launched their deadly attack on a holiday party.

The details emerged as investigators tried to determine whether the rampage that left 14 people dead was terrorism, a workplace grudge or some combination.
The husband-and-wife killers were not under FBI scrutiny before the massacre, said a second U.S. official, who likewise was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Wearing black tactical gear and wielding assault rifles, Farook, a 28-year-old county restaurant inspector, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27, sprayed as many as 75 rounds into a room at a social service centre for the disabled, where about 75 of Farook's co-workers had gathered Wednesday morning. Farook had attended the event but slipped out and returned in battle dress.
Four hours later and two miles away, the couple died in a furious gunbattle in which they fired 76 rounds, while 23 law officers unleashed about 380, police said.
On Thursday, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan offered a grim inventory that suggested Wednesday's bloodbath could have been far worse.
At the social service centre, the couple left three rigged-together pipe bombs with a remote-control detonating device that apparently malfunctioned, and they had more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition remaining when police killed them in their rented SUV, Burguan said.
At a family home in the nearby town of Redlands, they had 12 pipe bombs, tools for making more, and over 3,000 additional rounds of ammunition, the chief said.
"We don't know if this was workplace rage or something larger or a combination of both," Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in Washington, echoing President Barack Obama. "We don't know the motivation."
Investigators are trying to determine whether Farook, who was Muslim, became radicalized — and, if so, how — as well as whether he was in contact with any foreign terrorist organization, said the U.S. intelligence official, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The same official said Farook had been in touch on social media with extremists who were under FBI scrutiny.

The second U.S. official said the FBI was treating the attack as a potential act of terror but had reached no conclusion that it was. The official said Farook had communication with individuals who were under FBI scrutiny. But the contact was with "people who weren't significant players on our radar," dated back some time, and there was no immediate indication of a surge in communication before the shooting.
The official cautioned that such contact by itself doesn't mean someone is a terrorist.
Rita Katz, director of SITE Intelligence Group, an organization that tracks and analyzes extremists, said it hasn't found any connection between Farook and jihadi groups. But she also said that some of Farook's social media posts seem to have been deleted before the attack.
Wednesday's rampage was the nation's deadliest mass shooting since 2012, when 26 children and adults were slain in Newtown, Connecticut.
In San Bernardino, a Southern California city of 214,000, the victims ranged in age from 26 to 60. A further 21 people were injured, including two police officers, authorities said. Two of the wounded remained in critical condition Thursday.
Nearly all the dead and wounded were county employees.
Authorities said the attack was carefully planned.
"There was obviously a mission here. We know that. We do not know why. We don't know if this was the intended target or if there was something that triggered him to do this immediately," David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI's Los Angeles office, said as the bureau took over the investigation.
Farook has no known criminal record, Burguan said. He was born in Chicago to a Pakistani family, raised in Southern California and worked at San Bernardino County's Department of Public Health for two stints totalling four years since 2010, according to authorities and acquaintances. The Saudi Embassy said he travelled to Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2014 for nine days.
As for Malik, she came to the U.S. in July 2014 on a Pakistani passport and a fiancĂ©e visa, authorities said. To get the visa, immigrants submit to an interview and biometric and background checks — screening intended to identify anyone who might pose a threat.
They were married on Aug. 16, 2014, in nearby Riverside County, according to their marriage license. Both listed their religion as Muslim.
The couple had a 6-month-old daughter who they dropped with relatives Wednesday morning before the shooting.
Adam Lankford, a criminal justice professor at the University of Alabama, said his review of mass public shootings in the U.S. indicates this is the first one in recent history involving a male-female team.
Farook was a devout Muslim who prayed every day and recently memorized the Qur’an, according to brothers Nizaam and Rahemaan Ali, who attended Dar Al Uloom Al Islamiyah mosque in San Bernardino with Farook.
Rahemaan Ali said he last saw Farook three weeks ago, when he abruptly stopped going to the mosque. Ali said Farook seemed happy and his usual self, and the brothers never saw a violent side.
"He never ever talked about killing people or discussed politics, or said that he had problems at work," Rahemaan Ali said. "He always had a smile on his face."
Federal authorities said Farook legally bought two handguns used in the massacre and their two assault rifles were legally bought by someone else. Authorities did not say how the rifles got into the attackers' hands.
Farook apparently was no stranger to guns.
A profile on a matchmaking website for South Asians that matched Farook's name, California hometown, county health job and Muslim faith said his interests included target shooting in his backyard. Though the date of the posting was not clear, it listed his age as 22 so it could have been six years old.
Two weeks ago, Farook and one of the co-workers he killed, 52-year-old Nicholas Thalasinos, had a heated conversation about Islam, according to Kuuleme Stephens, a friend of the victim.
Stephens said she happened to call Thalasinos while he was talking with Farook at work. She said Thalasinos told her Farook "doesn't agree that Islam is not a peaceful religion."
As for workplace conflicts, co-worker Patrick Baccari said that until the rampage, Farook showed no signs of unusual behaviour and was a reserved young man.
Baccari said he was sitting at the same table as Farook before Farook suddenly disappeared, leaving his coat on his chair. Baccari was in the bathroom when the shooting started; he suffered minor wounds from shrapnel slicing through the wall.
One of the first officers to reach the room said the carnage was "unspeakable" and the scene overwhelming — the smell of gunpowder, the wails of the injured, the blood, fire sprinklers pumping and fire alarms blaring. All in a room with a Christmas tree and decorations on every table.
"As we entered," said San Bernardino Police Lt. Mike Madden, "the situation was surreal."

Dear Maxy ,
My 12-year-old daughter confessed to me this evening that she believes she is bisexual . She was quite upset about a comment made by another girl today . I immediately comforted her , no holds barred . She will always be my baby .
I know your column has recommended some websites for parents and personal support , but I am unable to call them . I want to become more educated in order to guide my child on how to be happy with who she is .
This information will also help when she decides to tell her father and stepmother . Thank You
Love My Child
Dear  Love
I commend you for being a supportive, loving parent . Please keep in mind  that sexuality can be more fluid than we sometimes realize, especially for preteens and younger teenagers, so I hope you will continue  to be supportive while your daughter sorts it out and finds her identity. She is going through a normal process, nothing to worry about.
A great website  for parents  is PFLAG  ( pflag.org ). And if your daughter  is being bullied  because of her sexual orientation, contact the school immediately . This should not be tolerated . Ridicule from her peers would be more harmful to her than anything else at her age.
Maxy

Dear Maxy ,
My friends told me about you and I hope you can help . My husband and I have been married for two years , after living together for five years . We have four beautiful children . Things were going well until we moved into our new home . It's as if we suddenly became strangers . We barely speak to each other . He kept a lot of secrets and lied about everything .
I started snooping around and found out he was having two online affairs . I confronted him and he became angry as if it was my fault . He made me feel terrible , so I let him walk all over me and was miserable . He claims these "affairs" were the same as looking at pornography , but he's wrong . I know one of these women , and they were about sending him text messages and racy photos . Last month , he cleared out half of our bank account and won't tell me where the money went .
After that , I told him he had to stop or the marriage was over , so he trashed his phone and now he rarely goes online . But I can't help thinking , given the chance , he would do it all again . I love him and our family and believe in keeping our marriage intact , but I just don't trust him anymore . Should I leave him or give him another chance ?
Confused and Worried Wife
Dear Confused ,
Sometimes, when people who have lived together for a long period, marry, the dynamics of the relationship shift and change. There can be another period of adjustment.
However, when trust disappears in a marriage, it takes a great deal of effort  ... from both parties  ... to regain a foothold .
You have four children  together so it is worthwhile giving the marriage another chance.  But the trust issue will come up time after time. Your husband  has apparently trashed his phone but could quite conceivably get another that you do not know about. You obviously feel he could be deceitful again. Can you get past that? You must have had concerns or you would not have started snooping.
He may feel marriage has cramped his style or taken away his freedom. And he is rebelling against those confining feelings. It could be a temporary state of mind and at some point logic and reason will return and he will be himself again. The question is ... Do you want to wait and see?
He has already walked all over you and made you feel miserable and no doubt he will do it again.
The really worrisome fact is that he has taken half of your joint savings and won't tell you what he has done with them (this is a huge red flag) . It indicates more concern for his own indulgence than concern for his wife and children. It may even mean he is trying to separate his life from yours and the kids'.
Of course, marriage counseling is your best hope. A professional could help your husband understand what he is doing and how it is damaging his marriage and family.
If your husband refuses to go, consider that another red flag that could mean he does not care enough about the marriage to save it.  Go by yourself and let the counselor help you sort out your own feelings and focus on what is most important.  I won't lie to you, trying to save this
relationship does not sound very promising.
Maxy

Dear Maxy ,
An acquaintance recently lost his job , we invited him and his wife to move into our home on a temporary basis . We all agreed they would live with us until one of them found another professional position .
It's been only three months , but it's already uncomfortable . "Sue" and "Bob" do small household chores and pay a minimal amount in rent , but that doesn't counteract the interruption they have added to our daily lives .
They have taken over the Fridge , the cabinets , the laundry room , the living space and the kitchen . We have no private time anymore and cannot trust them to lock the doors or turn off the dryer or coffeemaker when they leave the house . They parade around the house semi-nude , make a lot of noise when we are sleeping and talk while we are reading or watching TV .
We have discussed these issues and others as they have come up , but it hasn't helped . We've asked them to keep out of our bedroom and home office , but the other day I found both of them coming out of the office .
We do not want to put locks all over . We want to trust them , but it seems unlikely . They have made comments about our bills , which indicates they have looked at our private mail .
They are supposedly applying for jobs , but so far haven't found anything that pays what they deserve . We worry we'll be stuck with them forever . They have severance pay , unemployment and money from family members . They spend it on manicures , personal trainers and new electronics . Here's the kicker : They are actively seeking a divorce .
How do we tell they have overstayed their welcome ?
Bad Roomies
Dear Roomies ,
These people are not your friends. They are using you and taking advantage of your hospitality and kindness.
The time has come to have some open, honest, straight talk. You need to set a deadline and stick to it . Tell Sue and Bob that you hadn't anticipated the job search would take so long  and you can no longer accommodate them . Give them one month to find other arrangements ... and that is generous.
If they don't seem like they are making preparations to leave after a week, bring home boxes so they can pack
and to help them along . At the end of the deadline, if they make no attempt to leave, tell them you will put their belongings on the front steps . Then change your locks . And in the meantime, put your personal correspondence in a lock box. They'll get the message.
Maxy

Dear Maxy ,
My husband and son have chronic lung problems . Our son has asthma and my husband's lung health has gotten worse over the years . We have never been smokers , but we have tolerated our relatives who are . Lately , however , family gatherings are proving difficult . Exposure to cigarette smoke can cause my husband to have a setback and my son's asthma to flare up .
I mentioned that their smoking causes problems , but they don't seem to pay attention . I don't want to hurt anyone's feeling . If I were a smoker , I would feel terrible if I thought I caused someone else to have health problems , but they don't seem to feel the same way . Yet they would be upset if we didn't attend these functions . Any suggestions ?
Smoked Out
Dear Smoked  Out ,
Your husband and son  should not  be subjected  to cigarette smoke, PERIOD. I think you have to emphasize strongly to your family just how serious their health problems are and how the smoke affects them . Unless these people are without feelings, they will co-operate.
Tell the relatives you love them  and would enjoy spending time with them, but  your family's health comes first . Ask if they would please smoke outside or in a separate room. It may help if you call in advance of an occasion. Otherwise, say sorry, but you will not be able to come .
Maxy

Dear Maxy ,
My budget is a little tight this year , and I can't provide the extravagant birthday presents I've been able to afford in years prior . Upon opening my gift , one of my friends looked at me and said , "What would I use this for?" I had gotten her a plant in a color-coordinated pot to match her living room as well as an amusing coaster set and a card . I felt incredibly put on the spot and said she could use it for everyday life . She looked unimpressed . This happened in front of a small group and I couldn't believe her bad manners . I couldn't afford anything grandiose , but I thought my presents were alright --- I wouldn't mind receiving them ! I am wondering if I shouldn't have skipped presents this year and said I was broke . Another friend's birthday is in a little over a month , and I'm debating between giving a less expensive gift or admitting my financial hardships . Are presents the way to celebrate a birthday , even if they're unappreciated ?
Presently Baffled
Dear Presently Baffled ,
First of all, I have to tell you, your friend is rude and ungracious. Any gift should be appreciated, just for the fact that you cared enough to bring one.
Be honest with your friends . Tell them that your finances are tight  and you can't afford  expensive  gifts anymore .
Believe it or not, they will understand. Otherwise they may draw their own conclusions as to why you got stingy all of a sudden. You don't want to find yourself  in an embarrassing position like that again. Your friends will realize that the value of the gift is in the love with which it is given, not the size  of your wallet .
Maxy

Dear Maxy ,
I visited my daughter at her university this past weekend and realized she had gained the dreaded freshman 15 . I didn't say anything to my daughter , but my girlfriend and I agreed that she gained weight in the 6 weeks she's been gone . My daughter called me after a doctor's visit during the week and was shocked to learn she had gained 13 pounds . Her pants were too tight on her and she said that she needs new clothing , but I think she should lose the weight she gained from late-night snacking on pizza so she can fit into the clothes she owns . My girlfriend told me to be more sympathetic . I think if my daughter can gain the weight , she can lose it too . Am I being unreasonable ?
Disapproving Dad
Dear disapproving Dad ,
Now is not the time  to scold  your daughter or make her suffer in clothing that is too small . College is a challenge and requires a period of adjustment and settling in for freshmen. They have no time in their schedule to prepare proper meals.
The second year is less stressful, more scholarly, and her lifestyle and habits will level out. Have a little faith in her good sense and wait.
The fact  that she called to tell you what the doctor reported shows that she trusts you and feels comfortable confiding in you. She already knows what foods are healthy for her  ... she is an adult. It might be a gentle reminder if you took her some nutritious, but not fattening, groceries.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to give away 99% of shares

Mark Zuckerberg, his wife Priscilla and their baby girl called Max

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan say they will give away 99% of their shares in the company to good causes as they announce the birth of their daughter Max. Mr Zuckerberg made the announcement in a letter to Max on his Facebook page.
He said they are donating their fortune to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative because they want to make the world a better place for Max to grow up in. Mr Zuckerberg said the donation currently amounts to $45bn. Max was born last week, but the couple only made the news of her birth public on Tuesday.
In his letter Mr Zuckerberg said the aim of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is "to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation".
Its initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.

"Your mother and I don't yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future," Mr Zuckerberg said at the start of his letter to Max.
"You've already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in," it added.
Billionaire investor Warren Buffet congratulated Zuckerberg and Chan, proclaiming that when it comes to giving away your fortune, "30 is the new 70".
No longer should billionaires wait to die before handing over money to a different generation, Buffet said, in a gushing approval of Silicon Valley's newest and most influential power couple.
Everything Mark Zuckerberg does is eyed with intense scrutiny, not least due to the nature of Facebook's business of making money from personal data. But while the 31-year-old's previous charitable efforts have been criticized for being too focused on building Facebook's user base, this latest pledge appears to leave the Facebook business to one side.
It's a continuation of what we've seen developing over the past six months, where Zuckerberg appears at ease hosting heads of state as he does in the company of his own development team. The days of Mark Zuckerberg being seen as a nerdy, awkward tech dork are well behind us. His ambition now is clearly to be a significant figure on the global political stage.
The letter highlighted the important role of technology in achieving the couple's goals of advancing human potential and equality.
"Many of the greatest opportunities for your generation will come from giving everyone access to the internet," Mr Zuckerberg wrote to his daughter.
He said more details about the donation will be released once he and Ms Chan return from paternity and maternity leave.
Mr Zuckerberg said he will remain CEO of Facebook for "many, many years to come," and Facebook said he is expected to be the controlling stockholder of the company for the "foreseeable future".

I don't wear a watch....I want my arms to weigh the same

I bought myself a parrot. The parrot talked. But it did not say, "I'm hungry." So it died.

I'd hate to be a giraffe with a sore throat. God damnit anyway!

I wanted to get a parrot, but I got a tape recorder instead. It's like a parrot who doesn't fly away. You don't have to worry about a tape recorder just suddenly leaving, in the name of freedom.

If you can't sleep, count sheep. Don't count endangered animals because you will run out.

I think foosball is a combination of soccer and shish kabobs.

The depressing thing about tennis is that no matter how much you play, you'll never be as good as a wall. I played a wall once, they're fucking relentless.

I played golf, I'm not good at golf, I never got a hole-in-one ... but I did hit a guy. And that's way more satisfying.  What's par for hitting a guy? One. If you hit a guy in two,
you are an asshole.

You know when they have a fishing show on TV? They catch the fish and then let it go. They don't want to eat the fish; they just want to make it late for something. "Why were you late?" "I got caught!" "Bullshit, let me see the inside of your lip!"

All McDonalds commercials end the same way: "prices and participation may vary." I want to open my own McDonalds and not participate in anything. I want to be a stubborn McDonalds owner. "Cheeseburgers? Nope.We got spaghetti!...And blankets. But we are not affiliated with that clown, he attracts too many children."

When you go to a restaurant on the weekends and it's busy they start a waiting list. They start calling out names, they say "Dufrane, party of two. Dufrane, party of two." And if no one answers they'll say their name again. "Dufrane, party of two, Dufrane, party of two." But then if no one answers they'll just go right to the next name. "Bush, party of three." Yeah, but what happened to the Dufranes? No one seems to give a shit. Who can eat at a time like this - people are missing. You fuckers are selfish... the Dufranes are in someone's trunk right now, with duct tape over their mouths. And they're hungry! That's a double whammy. We need help. Bush, search party of three! You can eat when you find the Dufranes.

I hate turkeys. If you stand in the meat section at the grocery store long enough, you start to get pissed off at turkeys. There's turkey ham, turkey bologna, turkey pastrami. Someone needs to tell the turkey "Man, just be yourself. I already like you, little brother. You do not need to emulate the other animals.

I was in downtown Boise, Idaho, and I saw a duck, and I knew the duck was lost, 'cause ducks ain't s'posed to be downtown. There's nothin' for 'em there. So I went to a Subway sandwich shop, I said, "Let me have a bun." But she wouldn't sell me just the bun, she said that I had to have something on it. She told me it's against regulations for Subway to sell just the bun. I guess the two halves ain't supposed to touch. So I said, "Alright, well, put some lettuce on it," which she did. She said, "That'll be $1.75." I said, "It's for a duck." And they said, "All right, well, then it's free." See, I did not know that.
Ducks eat for free at Subway! Had I known that, I would have ordered a much larger sandwich. "Let me have the Steak Fajita Sub - but don't bother ringing

Faulty rudder system major factor in AirAsia QZ8501 crash

Repeated problems with the system led to the pilots disengaging the autopilot in stormy weather in a bid to fix the situation, and then losing control of the Airbus A320-200.

File photo of a section of AirAsia flight QZ8501's tail being loaded onto a boat for transportation to Jakarta from Kumai Port, near Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan

JAKARTA: A fault with the rudder control system was a major factor in the December AirAsia plane crash into the Java Sea that left 162 people dead, Indonesian investigators said on Tuesday (Dec 1).
Repeated problems with the system led to the pilots disengaging the autopilot in stormy weather in a bid to fix the situation, and then losing control of the Airbus A320-200, Indonesia's official National Transportation Safety Committee said.
In their final report into the crash, investigators said the soldering on the Rudder Travel Limiter system - which helps control the rudder's movement - was cracked, leading it to send repeated warning signals to the pilots.
When they received the fourth warning, the pilots pulled circuit-breakers on part of the aircraft's control system in a bid to reset the system. This turned off the autopilot, and the plane then started to roll, the report said.
"Subsequent flight crew action resulted in inability to control the aircraft," said the report. The plane went into a "prolonged stall condition that was beyond the capability of the crew to recover", it said.
It added the flight data recorders did not indicate the weather had affected the aircraft.
